School News 9th may 2025

We have had a great week and are excited to be ending it with some more beautiful sunshine. We have had a busy and productive 4 days together and have some lovely things to share with you.

This week, across the UK and Europe, it has been the remembrance and celebration of VE Day and the 80th anniversary. We have focused on this important national event in our assemblies and have each contributed a flag to our amazing VE Day bunting. We are sure that you will agree; the bunting is a fitting tribute to this event.

In our Wednesday assembly, we shared images from the VE Day parties 80 years ago and considered how you could tell more about the past from photographs. Thinking about how people lived and how they were feeling, we showed great interest and empathy in our shared ideas.  In this assembly, we l also heard from Year 5, along with Mrs. Welson, who shared their experience of meeting our 4 fantastic VE Day veterans and were able to explain how children at Kington Primary may have celebrated 80 years ago. One of the veterans had explained that children in our school had been given jelly and chocolate biscuits by the American soldiers based at Hergest as a treat to celebrate VE Day! We were all so interested to hear about these fascinating personal memories and Year 5 really appreciated the opportunity to meet the veterans.

On Thursday, we gathered at the front of school to view the bunting and to share a moment of silence to think about VE Day, World War II and how lucky we are today. Our Year 5 and 6 children, who are going to share a poem at the VE Day march on Sunday, shared this poem and they read it very well, giving us all some important ideas to think about.

On Friday, we had a jam-packed assembly! We were excited to have the final of the table tennis inter-house competition - Tom won against Luke who also played brilliantly. It was very close - this was a rematch of last time, which in itself is a huge achievement. We also had our headteacher stickers, which were awarded for such an amazing array of reasons, including a great effort with writing, always doing their best and showing our school values, being a kind friend, showing wonderful bravery, engaging well with science and understanding fractions confidently.

As promised last week, there are also a few pictures from the Year 3 and 4 trip to Caerleon which was brilliant! Wherever we went we were complimented on our manners, friendliness and knowledge of the Romans and it was a pleasure to take them all.

We hope that everyone has a great weekend (enjoy the fair if you are going). We might see some of you on Sunday if you are taking part in or coming to watch the VE Day parade.  We look forward to welcoming you all back on Monday.
